Composer & Scholar — electroacoustic, contemporary, and cross-cultural music

I am pleased to share that my article, Tracing Poetic Atmospheres: Multichannel Electroacoustic Soundscapes and Their Cultural Dimensions, has been published in the Computer Music Journal. This research explores the concept of “atmosphere” within multichannel soundscapes, examining how these immersive environments function as spaces that are felt and inhabited by the listener.

The text investigates how listening can be viewed as an act of poetic attunement. To build this framework, I draw upon the work of several philosophers, including Gernot Böhme, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Martin Heidegger, Gaston Bachelard, and Peter Sloterdijk. By engaging with their theories, the article looks at atmosphere as a phenomenon where technology and imagination intersect to create specific emotional and spatial textures.

A significant portion of the article is dedicated to the analysis of compositions by Edgard Varèse, Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp, Natasha Barrett, and Zhang Xiaofu. These close readings demonstrate how memory and place are woven into sonic architectures, treating the soundscape as a spatial text rather than a linear narrative. This perspective highlights the role of electroacoustic art in shaping cultural and ethical encounters through sound.

For those interested in the philosophical and technical dimensions of soundscape composition, the full article is now available through the MIT Press website. You can find the complete text and citation information using the DOI: https://doi.org/10.1162/COMJ.a.696.
